Morphium Skateboards
Morphium Skateboards is the German independent skate brand from Hamburg, running since 1997 — founded and still solely owned by Karl Knoop. What started as Ralf Nehe's homemade stickers in the mid-90s, passed around the local Hamburg crew, has become one of Germany's longest-running independent skateboard brands. The "100% Skateboarding since 1997" tagline isn't marketing fluff — it's the operating principle.
Heritage — from stickers to skate brand
Hamburg, mid-90s: Ralf Nehe prints Morphium stickers on his inkjet; the crew slaps them on everything. The stickers became embroidered sweatshirts (over 100 sold in the region), the sweatshirts became boards. Karl Knoop teamed up with Richi Löffler and Shiran Habekost — who had an American deck-supply connection — and the first board order shipped in 1997. The brand has stayed independent ever since, no major distro, no big marketing budgets, all Hamburg-crew spirit.
Which Morphium products fit which skater?
The catalog stays focused: decks and completes, often with horror-movie-themed graphics (Pennywise, The Nun, Beetlejuice).
- Morphium Decks — classic popsicle shapes in standard widths 7.50–8.50 inch, 7-ply North American maple. Solid pop, standard concave, built for street, ledges and flatground.
- Morphium Complete Skateboards — beginner-friendly builds with standard trucks, ABEC bearings and 99A wheels. Daily-beater setups for riders who don't want to spec their own.
- Pop-culture graphics — series like Mörphium, Scribble, Poppies, Logo Letters, Weapons. If you're into horror-movie aesthetics (Pennywise, The Nun, Beetlejuice), this is where you land.
The team — Hamburg and beyond
The Morphium team has grown over the years. Past and current riders include Söhnke Mücke (known for heelflips and frontside flips, central to the brand's story), Mark Frölich, Benny Vogel, Max Dwertmann, Dennis Bohlken, Phong Phu Pham and returning rider Bülent Kurtca (back on the team after a 19-year break). The roster shifts — the Hamburg core stays.
FAQ
What is Morphium Skateboards?
A German independent skateboard brand from Hamburg, founded in 1997 by Karl Knoop. One of the longest-running independent skate brands in Germany.
What does "Morphium" mean?
The name came from the — by their own account — "crazy thoughts" of Ralf Nehe in the mid-90s, who handed out the first stickers in the Hamburg scene.
Are Morphium boards good for beginners?
Yes. Standard sizes, 7-ply maple construction, regular concave. Beginners are usually better off with a complete board; the bare deck makes sense when you build your own setup (see skateboard decks). Trucks from Independent and wheels from Spitfire pair well.
Where are Morphium boards produced?
Karl Knoop's original supply ran through a US connection — Morphium decks are classically pressed (the standard for indie boards from Europe/USA).
How fast does Morphium ship?
Everything ships from our Giessen warehouse in 1–2 business days. Drop us a line if you need help with deck size or setup.
