Skate shoes in the sale

Reduced skate shoes, mostly from éS, Emerica and Lakai. What ends up here are colourways on the way out and single sizes from models being cleared – technically the same shoes as in the regular category, just no longer in a full size run. If your size is in there, this is the cheapest route to a proper skate shoe.

Vulcanized or cupsole?

The biggest difference between two skate shoes is the way the sole is built, not the brand.

• Vulcanized: a thin rubber sole vulcanized straight onto the upper. Very flexible with a direct board feel, so you sense the griptape under your foot. In return, less cushioning on hard landings and, as a rule, a shorter life.
• Cupsole: the shoe sits in a stitched sole cup that wraps around it. Stiffer and more stable, noticeably more cushioning for stairs and big drops, but it takes longer to break in.

If you skate a lot of flip tricks, vulc is the better bet. If you land from height, a cupsole lasts you longer.

What to watch with reduced sizes

Skate shoes come up differently from brand to brand, and in the sale you usually cannot fall back on the size next door. So go by a model you have already skated. A reinforced suede panel over the toe area is the detail that decides whether a shoe lasts three weeks or three months.
