TSG
TSG stands for Technical Safety Gear and was founded in 1988 in Münster, Germany by Titus Dittmann — born out of the simple fact that skaters in the mid-80s were patching together makeshift pads and repurposing bike helmets that weren't designed for skating. Since then TSG has made protective gear for skateboarding, BMX, mountain bike, snowboard and ski. In 2005 the headquarters moved from Münster to Zurich; the company remains privately owned and rider-driven today.
Heritage — from Münster pad maker to Swiss protective specialist
1988 in Münster: Titus Dittmann recognized that there were no pads built specifically for skateboarding. TSG started with knee and elbow pads, the first TSG skate helmet followed in 1990. In 1998 TSG introduced the world's first certified hard-shell helmet for skate and BMX. The Tony Hawk pro model arrived in 1999. The HQ moved to Zurich in 2005, making Swiss design a part of the brand's DNA. In 2014 TSG launched the Pass full-face downhill helmet, developed with three-time downhill world champion Martin Siegrist. The Pass 2.0 followed in 2024. Protective gear has come a long way since 1988 — TSG has been part of that evolution.
Which TSG products fit which ride?
- TSG Evolution — the TSG all-rounder for skate, BMX and cruising. Hard shell, EPS liner, standard for park and bowl skaters. Available in S/M, L/XL and a range of colors (satin dark cyan, satin dark black, gentle red).
- TSG Meta — a touch lighter with more ventilation than the Evolution. Solid colors, standard skate-helmet pick for park and street.
- TSG Nipper Mini / Maxi — kids' helmets. Nipper Mini for the smallest (gloss baby pink, gloss baby blue, satin black), Nipper Maxi for slightly older kids.
- TSG Protection Sets (Junior, Basic) — knee, elbow and wrist pads bundled. Junior set for kids, Basic set for adult beginners.
- TSG Pass / Pass 2.0 — full-face downhill helmet, developed with Martin Siegrist. Built for hill bombing and downhill racing — not for everyday street skating.
Why TSG — instead of a bike helmet?
Skate slams differ from bike slams: multiple per session, often onto the back of the head, lower speed, higher frequency. TSG skate helmets carry more material at the back, lower weight and a certified hard shell (EN 1078 for skateboard/BMX). A standard MTB helmet protects more in front, less in the back. Rule of thumb: for park, bowl and street use a dedicated skate helmet like Evolution or Meta — for hill bombing the Pass full-face.
FAQ
What does TSG stand for?
Technical Safety Gear. Founded in 1988 in Münster, Germany by Titus Dittmann.
Who owns TSG?
TSG is privately owned, headquartered in Zurich since 2005. Ruedi Herger and partners took the brand over from Titus AG.
Which standard should a skate helmet meet?
EN 1078 (the European standard for helmets used by cyclists, skateboarders and inline skaters) is the legal benchmark. TSG skate helmets meet it — and in 1998 TSG put the world's first certified hard-shell helmet of this class on the market.
How do I pick the right helmet size?
Measure head circumference just above the eyebrows: S/M is usually 54–57 cm, L/XL usually 57–60 cm. Nipper Mini sits around 48–51 cm. If you're unsure, drop us a line — we'll help.
Do I also need pads?
For park, bowl and while learning: yes. Knees and wrists are the two most-injured spots. TSG offers protection sets that cover both.
How fast does TSG ship?
Everything ships from our Giessen warehouse in 1–2 business days. If you need help with helmet size or pad selection, get in touch.
