How a Skateboard Deck Is Built

A classic skateboard deck is made of 7 plies of Canadian maple, bonded under high pressure. High-quality decks are cold-pressed – it takes longer and costs more, but it gives better pop, more durability and a longer life. Over the years there have been plenty of attempts with fiberglass, plastic, aluminum or carbon – but one material has won out to this day: Canadian maple. It offers the best mix of stability, flex and pop, and has stayed the worldwide standard for decades.

Shapes – From Popsicle to Old School

The most common shape today is the popsicle deck (twin tip): nose and tail both kicked up, with a symmetrical outline. This shape is what makes tricks like the ollie, kickflip and slides possible. Alongside it are shaped and old-school decks with a wider nose or squared tail – popular for cruising, pools and a retro feel.

What really shapes the ride is the concave, the lengthwise curve of the deck:

• Low concave: flatter, stable stance – good for technical, controlled skating.
• Mid concave: the all-rounder most skaters get along with.
• High concave: a stronger curve for more grip underfoot and quick flips.

Which Deck Width Suits You?

With a deck, width (in inches) matters most, not length. As a rough guide:

• 7.75" – 8.0": narrower and nimble – ideal for technical street skating and smaller feet.
• 8.0" – 8.25": the all-rounder for most adults.
• 8.25" and up: more stability for park, bowl and transition.
